Zanzibar is renowned as the “spice island”, living up to its name with its intensive spice production playing a large part in the local economy. Throughout the centuries hundreds of thousands of shiploads, from Arabia, Europe and the East have transported this precious cargo. Nowadays, many “farms”are small local activities or farmers’ cooperatives which produce a vast amount of plants. The spice tour consists of a guided tour through these plantations so you can see the surprising origin of those brightly coloured powders we see only at the end of the production chain. Many spices are tiny fruits from huge trees, others are roots only visible to the expert eye ,others are leaves or bark. During the tour our guests will have the chance to look, smell and taste these precious gifts from the Earth and finally to have a lunch flavoured with the best products of the farmland.
Along the way back, guests will also visit the Kidichi Persian baths adorned with plasters and the ruins of the Sultan’s Palace in Maruhubi surrounded by basins of water lilies.
Duration: 3 and a half hours (lunch included)
This excursion can be combined with the Stone Town tour or the Prison Island tour.
