The GUEST HOUSE WHY Onlus is in the small fishing village of Jambiani situated in the South East of Unguja Island (o.k.a. Zanzibar, the actual name of the entire archipelago) and is near to our Onlus WHY headquarters. The building itself is in the middle of the village within a tropical garden boasting many plants and flowers and has been built respecting the surrounding natural environment and local culture. We have kept to the original local design and size with the characteristic makuti roof (wooden frame covered with woven coconut-palm leaves) in order to keep to and support local traditions and landscape.
The Muba Guest House has only 3 rooms. Simple and comfy spaces on the ground floor with:
- private bathroom
- hot and cold tap water
- ceiling fans
- mosquito nets on both windows and beds
- towels and bed linen
- daily cleaning
There is a large open-space communal roof room with armchairs and beds for relaxing moments in the refreshing shade of the makuti roof. It is a stone’s throw away from the sea and boasts a beautiful garden with shaded relaxer chairs and a small restaurant “Starfish” run by local people. Overnight stays with breakfast included (bed&breakfast). For the other meals tourists have a wide choice from nearby local restaurants where you can find European food or the tasty local dishes prepared and served by local people.
Local staff: those responsible for the running of the guesthouse, the guides, the drivers, the staff are exclusively local. They may be substituted by Italian staff, all referenced workers for WHY, only in the case of Ramadan or personal needs.
The driving force behind this project is to comply perfectly to the principles behind responsible and solidarity tourism which state:
“Responsible tourism is a tourism founded on the principles of providing and supporting social and economic justice as well as completely respecting the local area. It recognizes the rights of local people to have a main role in touristic development in their area,a tourism which must be sustainable and responisible. It works in a way to favor positive interaction between the tourist industry ,local communities and travelers.” Official definition adopted by the Italian Association of Responsible Tourism,9/10/2005.
